Vision - Creative History

Creative History is a new concept of history, which emphasizes documenting the folk memories present in rural areas to understand national history. The scholars associated with this history writing group believe that the participation of rural people is necessary in history writing of the public domain, because without considering the regional history, the history of any nation or society and culture is not capable of representing its totality in the true sense. With this concept, the scholars associated with the Creative History Trust try to make the historical memories present in the minds of rural people, along with regional and rural intellectuals, a part of the new history writing process.

This group also believes that in the process of writing history, there is a need to understand, assess and document the intellectual consciousness of the traditional knowledge present in the rural society, which is the pivot of the contemporary society and on which the building process of a new rational and progressive society continues constantly.

The Creative History group, in collaboration with Rangshree since 2010 and independently since 2022, has attempted to document the history of rural society, under which the symposium focused on rural life "My Village, My History" and “Annual Lectures” were started. Through these projects, efforts are being made to understand the parallel rural stream of national history, which was created by the folk society while fighting colonialism and imperialism during the freedom struggle movement. Our effort can also be considered an intervention in mainstream history writing. We strongly believe that history desperately needs to be seen, understood, and written from the people’s perspective.

The Creative History group also seeks to document historical contexts present in folk memory, philosophy, and other forms that mainstream historians dismiss as unimportant. Although the scope of work of “Creative History” is the entire rural area of India, but for the convenience of study, the group has initially selected some specific areas of North India and especially – the rural areas of Buxar, Ballia and Banaras. Since these areas played an important role in the Indian independence movement and many elements of ancient, medieval, and modern Indian history, culture and knowledge are still present in the minds of the people there, hence from the point of view of historical documentation, these areas can also be seen as a laboratory for us.

This effort of ours is a part of a process of understanding the new history of the Indian nation, which presents rural intellectualism as a major source of history writing and highlights the structure of a larger intellectual society.

सर्जनात्मक इतिहास

सर्जनात्मक इतिहास/ क्रिएटिव हिस्ट्री (Creative History) इतिहास की एक नई अवधारणा है, जो राष्ट्रीय इतिहास को समझने के लिए ग्रामीण क्षेत्र में मौजूद लोक स्मृतियों का दस्तावेज़ीकरण करने पर ज़ोर देती है। इस इतिहास लेखन समूह से जुड़े अध्येताओं का मानना है कि सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के इतिहास लेखन में ग्रामीण जनता की भागीदारी ज़रूरी है, क्योंकि बिना क्षेत्रीय इतिहास पर विचार किए किसी भी राष्ट्र अथवा समाज और संस्कृति का इतिहास सही मायने में समग्रता का प्रतिनिधित्व करने में समर्थ नहीं माना जा सकता। इसी परिकल्पना के साथ क्रिएटिव हिस्ट्री समूह से जुड़े अध्येता ग्रामीण लोक मानस में उपस्थित ऐतिहासिक स्मृतियों  (Historical Memories) को क्षेत्रीय एवं ग्रामीण बुद्धिजीवियों के साथ मिलकर उसे नए इतिहास लेखन का हिस्सा बनाने की कोशिश करते हैं।

इस समूह का यह भी मानना है कि इतिहास लेखन की प्रक्रिया में ग्रामीण समाज में मौजूद पारंपरिक ज्ञान की उस बौद्धिक चेतना को समझने, उसका आकलन और दस्तावेज़ीकरण करने की आवश्यकता है, जो समकालीन समाज की धुरी है तथा जिस पर एक नए विवेकशील एवं प्रगतिशील समाज के निर्माण की प्रक्रिया निरंतर चलती रहती है।

क्रिएटिव हिस्ट्री (Creative History) समूह ने सन् 2010 से रंगश्री के साथ मिलकर और सन् 2021 से स्वतंत्र रूप से ग्रामीण समाज के इतिहास के दस्तावेज़ीकरण का प्रयास किया है, जिसके अंतर्गत ग्रामीण जीवन पर केंद्रित परिसंवाद "मेरा गाँव, मेरा इतिहास" (My Village, My History) और “वार्षिक व्याख्यान” शुरू किए गए। इन परियोजनाओं के माध्यम से राष्ट्रीय इतिहास की उस समानांतर ग्रामीण धारा को समझने का प्रयास किया जा रहा है, जिसे स्वाधीनता संग्राम के आंदोलन के दौरान लोक-समाज ने उपनिवेशवाद और साम्राज्यवाद से संघर्ष करते हुए गढ़ा था। हमारा यह प्रयास मुख्यधारा के इतिहास लेखन में एक हस्तक्षेप भी समझा जा सकता है। हमारा दृढ़ विश्वास है कि इतिहास को लोक की निगाह से देखने, समझने और लिखे जाने की सख़्त ज़रूरत है।

Creative History/क्रिएटिव हिस्ट्री समूह लोक-स्मृति, दर्शन और अन्य रूपों में मौजूद उन ऐतिहासिक संदर्भों के दस्तावेज़ीकरण के लिए भी प्रयासरत है, जिसे मुख्यधारा के इतिहासकार महत्वहीन मानकर छोड़ देते हैं। यद्यपि “क्रिएटिव हिस्ट्री” का कार्य क्षेत्र पूरे भारत का ग्रामीण क्षेत्र है परंतु अध्ययन की सुविधा के लिए समूह ने शुरुआत में उत्तर भारत के कुछ विशेष क्षेत्रों का चुनाव किया है और ख़ासकरके - बक्सर, बलिया और बनारस के ग्रामीण क्षेत्र। चूँकि इन क्षेत्रों ने भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभायी और साथ ही वहाँ के लोक-मानस में आज भी प्राचीन, मध्यकालीन और आधुनिक भारतीय इतिहास, संस्कृति और ज्ञान के अनेक तत्त्व विद्यमान हैं, इसलिए इतिहास के दस्तावेज़ीकरण की दृष्टि से इन क्षेत्रों को हमारे लिए एक प्रयोगशाला के रूप में भी देखा जा सकता है।

कहना न होगा कि हमारा यह प्रयास भारतीय राष्ट्र के उस नए इतिहास को समझने की एक प्रक्रिया का ही हिस्सा है,  जो ग्रामीण बौद्धिकता को इतिहास लेखन के एक बड़े स्रोत के रूप में प्रस्तुत करता है और वृहत्तर बौद्धिक समाज की संरचना पर प्रकाश डालता है।
